My wife is in Annapolis for work this week so we're each on our own for training. I just got back from Pennypack Park doing the 30 minute tempo run that's called for in the yellow schedule. Yesterday I did the 30 second sprint 30 second jog 14 times which is pretty much the first time I've ever done speed work. Tuesday I did nothing and just ate Chick-fil-a.
I'm finding that I'm digging following the actual schedule more than my usual routine of just getting out there and running Monday through Thursday and letting my legs just dictate how to run. That was getting monotonous. Also, I don't think I've taken training too seriously up until now but last week's 12 miles really humbled me. I had run 22 miles Monday through Thursday and think I might have overdone it. The scheduled routine seems weaker than my usual week but that might give my legs the rest they need to do these longer runs which I'm really looking forward to.
My name is Jim and my wife and I are training for our first marathon. Here's all my training posts to date.
Hi Jim, I think that 12 miler last weekend put us all in our place(or on our butts). You're right about the weekday schedule; it's designed to keep you ready for the next long slow distance. The tempos and speedwork will help you get more out of your long distances and your evenutal races!
